Long before cell phones made it easy to reach home, Toby Keith had a nightly routine that most country music fans never knew about. No matter where the tour took Toby Keith, the country star found a pay phone and called home to read Bible stories to the children.

For millions of fans, Toby Keith was Big Dog Daddy, the larger-than-life Oklahoma singer behind hits like “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” “How Do You Like Me Now?!” and “Beer for My Horses.” But inside the Keith household, the man with the cowboy hat and unmistakable voice had a much simpler identity.

Toby Keith was Dad.

The Phone Calls That Kept a Family Close

In August 2024, nearly seven months after Toby Keith died on February 5, daughter Krystal Keith spoke with AARP about growing up with one of country music’s biggest stars.

One memory stood out: those nightly calls from the road.

Krystal Keith explained that, during the early years of touring, Toby Keith called the family every night and read Bible stories over the telephone. Even when work required long stretches away from Oklahoma, those calls helped keep the family connected.

Krystal Keith summed up that childhood with a remarkable observation:

“We never felt like we were missing anything.”

As Toby Keith’s career grew and traveling became more comfortable, the family had additional opportunities to spend time together. Once Toby Keith could afford a tour bus, the children sometimes joined the tours, provided the trips did not interfere with school or sports.

For Krystal Keith, the road was not simply a place where a famous father worked. It eventually became somewhere father and daughter could share a love of music.

The Airport Memory Krystal Keith Never Forgot

There was another family memory, shared years earlier, that revealed how the Keith family handled the difficult part of life on the road.

In an April 2013 interview with The Boot, Krystal Keith recalled what happened when Toby Keith had to leave for a flight.

Sometimes, the children were still asleep when it was time for Toby Keith to go. Rather than miss the opportunity to say goodbye, the family would wrap the children in their comforters, carry them to the car and take them to the airport.

Once there, the children would be awakened so they could hug and kiss their father goodbye before watching the flight depart. Afterward, the family returned home, and the children went back to bed.

It is an unusually personal picture of life behind a successful country music career.

Krystal Keith did not describe those departures primarily as painful separations. Instead, the memory centered on the effort the family made to be together, even for a few moments before another trip.

Why Toby Keith Kept His Family in Oklahoma

By the mid-1990s, Toby Keith had become a nationally recognized recording artist. Nashville was the center of the country music business, but Toby Keith never chose to relocate the family there.

According to Krystal Keith’s 2024 interview, the decision was closely connected to the childhood Toby Keith wanted for the children.

Oklahoma offered a better opportunity for an ordinary family life, away from the intense attention that might have followed the children in Nashville.

Krystal Keith had expressed the same feeling long before Toby Keith’s death. In 2013, Krystal Keith described growing up in the household as remarkably normal, despite the success unfolding outside its doors.

The family experienced the advantages that came with Toby Keith’s growing career, but the everyday routines of home remained important.

When Father and Daughter Shared the Stage

As Krystal Keith grew older, the family connection found another expression through music.

Krystal Keith recalled first joining Toby Keith onstage at age 13, initially singing along from the back before eventually performing the national anthem for large audiences.

In 2004, father and daughter performed together at the CMA Awards, giving country fans a glimpse of a relationship that had developed well beyond those early telephone calls.

Twenty years later, at the July 2024 tribute concert Toby Keith: American Icon, Krystal Keith returned to the stage to honor Toby Keith with a performance of “Don’t Let the Old Man In.”

The tribute celebrated the recording artist millions knew. But the interviews Krystal Keith gave after Toby Keith’s death also preserved memories of the father behind the music.

There were the Bible stories over the telephone, the children wrapped in blankets for airport goodbyes, the decision to raise a family in Oklahoma and the opportunities to share the stage.

For longtime fans, those memories offer something different from another list of hit records or awards. They reveal what life with Toby Keith looked like to the people who knew the country star before, during and beyond the years of fame.

And one of the most revealing memories begins not with a microphone onstage, but with a father finding a telephone so the children could hear another bedtime story.
