On February 5, 2024, country music lost Toby Keith at the age of 62. But for Tricia Lucus, the loss was far more personal. After nearly four decades of marriage, Tricia lost the man she had loved since they were both young and struggling to make a living in Oklahoma.
They were just 48 days away from celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary.
What makes their story especially moving is not simply how long they stayed together. It is what happened during those years, including a family tragedy that forever changed the meaning of their wedding anniversary.
She Believed in Toby Keith Before the World Knew His Name
Toby Keith met Tricia Lucus at an Oklahoma nightclub in 1981. Tricia was 19, and Toby was 20. Toby worked in the oil fields while performing at local bars with the Easy Money Band.
Tricia later remembered Toby as a confident young man with a larger-than-life personality.
They married on March 24, 1984. Toby adopted Tricia’s daughter, Shelley, and the couple later welcomed two more children, Krystal and Stelen.
Marriage brought responsibilities that were difficult to meet on a musician’s uncertain income. When Oklahoma’s oil industry collapsed, Toby lost the financial security that oilfield work had provided.
Music became the dream Toby was determined to pursue, even when the bills kept coming.
Friends and acquaintances urged Tricia to convince Toby to find a steady job. But Tricia continued supporting the music career that many people considered an impossible gamble.
Years later, Tricia recalled Toby’s repeated reassurance:
“Trish, one of these days, my time is coming. Hang in there.”
In 1993, that promise began to come true. Toby Keith’s debut single, Should’ve Been a Cowboy, reached No. 1 on the country chart. The struggling Oklahoma musician was becoming a national country star.
The Tragedy That Changed Their Wedding Anniversary
March 24 was supposed to be a happy date for Toby Keith and Tricia. It marked the beginning of their marriage and the life they had built together.
But on March 24, 2001, their 17th wedding anniversary, something terrible happened.
Toby Keith’s father, Hubert K. Covel Jr., died in a traffic accident.
Hubert was a Korean War veteran who had worked in the oil industry. Toby had followed his father into that same business before pursuing music full-time.
The accident meant that March 24 would forever carry two very different family memories: a wedding anniversary and the death of Toby’s father.
Later that year, the September 11 attacks brought another turning point. Toby Keith drew upon the loss of his father, Hubert’s military service, and the national tragedy when writing Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American).
The song became one of Toby Keith’s most recognizable recordings, but its personal connection to Hubert’s memory gave it a meaning beyond its public reputation.
For Toby and Tricia, March 24 was never simply another anniversary again.
When Toby Keith Needed Tricia Most
In the fall of 2021, Toby Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer. The diagnosis became public in June 2022.
During an interview with Oklahoma’s News 9 in the final months of Toby’s life, the country singer spoke about Tricia’s support during treatment.
Toby remembered their first hospital visit in Houston. Tricia immediately took charge of the arrangements and reassured her husband.
“We got this. Let’s go.”
Toby described Tricia as a trooper and called her “the best nurse.”
It was another chapter in a marriage that had already survived financial uncertainty, the demands of fame, and the ordinary responsibilities of raising a family.
Long before the hospital visits, Tricia had stood beside a young musician who could offer little certainty about the future. Nearly 40 years later, Tricia was still beside Toby.
Forty Years, Almost
Toby Keith died peacefully on February 5, 2024, surrounded by family. Toby was 62 years old.
Had Toby lived another 48 days, March 24, 2024, would have marked 40 years since the wedding that began their life together.
Instead, Tricia faced that anniversary without her husband.
The date had already carried the memory of Toby’s father for 23 years. Now it also marked the milestone Toby and Tricia had nearly reached together.
From Oklahoma nightclubs and oilfield layoffs to sold-out concerts and the final years at home, their marriage lasted through circumstances neither could have imagined in 1981.
They never reached their 40th wedding anniversary. But the nearly four decades Toby Keith and Tricia shared remain a remarkable part of the country singer’s life story.
