On December 15, 1984, “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” by Anne Murray and Dave Loggins reached No. 1 on Billboard’s country singles chart. At home, Anne’s daughter Dawn Langstroth was five years old. In 2007, when Anne Murray chose the songs for her farewell-era duets album, that same No. 1 hit went to Dawn.
Same song. Same melody. A completely different pair of people singing it.
Not the first time they sang together
Dawn Langstroth did not walk into her mother’s studio as a stranger to the microphone. In 1999, when she was 20, she sang with Anne Murray on “Let There Be Love,” a song written by Amy Sky and Steven MacKinnon for Anne’s inspirational album What a Wonderful World. It was chosen as the album’s first single, and a music video was made for it.
One reviewer at the time noted that Dawn was not yet a professional singer, and still called the duet one of the album’s highlights. Over the next several years, that changed. By 2007 Dawn was writing her own songs and recording her own music in Toronto, and she had released a self-titled EP.
So when the call came for the duets album, she was not a famous mother’s guest. She was a working singer stepping into one of her mother’s biggest records.
The love song that started on a soap opera
“Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” was written by James Dunne and Pamela Phillips. Before it ever reached country radio, a different version was introduced on the daytime drama As the World Turns in August 1984, sung by Jermaine Jackson and a young Whitney Houston.
Anne Murray’s version with Dave Loggins came out as a country single on August 27, 1984, the first single from her album Heart Over Mind, produced by Jim Ed Norman. The two sang it on the TV show Solid Gold that October, and by mid-December it was the No. 1 country song in America.
Loggins was best known as a songwriter and for his 1974 pop hit “Please Come to Boston.” This duet became his only hit on the country chart as a performer. On October 14, 1985, at the Grand Ole Opry House, he and Anne Murray were named Vocal Duo of the Year at the CMA Awards. Loggins did not have a record contract at the time, which made him the first unsigned singer ever to win a CMA artist award. Anne Murray co-hosted the broadcast that night with Kris Kristofferson.
On tour, Loggins was not usually the one beside her. In concert, Anne sang the duet with singer Billie Hughes.
Seventeen songs, seventeen voices
Anne Murray Duets: Friends & Legends was recorded between the fall of 2006 and the summer of 2007, in Toronto, Nashville, New York and Los Angeles, with the veteran producer Phil Ramone. The idea was simple: take 17 of Anne Murray’s best-known songs and sing each one with a female artist she admired.
The guest list read like a who’s who. Shania Twain sang “You Needed Me.” Martina McBride took “Danny’s Song.” Emmylou Harris, CĂ©line Dion, k.d. lang, Carole King, Olivia Newton-John, Amy Grant and Nelly Furtado all had a song. One track even paired Anne with a 1979 recording by her late friend Dusty Springfield.
Track 11 was “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do,” with Dawn Langstroth.
The words had been written as a promise between lovers, and in 1984 that is exactly how two adult singers delivered them. In 2007 nothing in the song had been rewritten. What changed was who was standing at the microphones. The same lines about a love no one else could match were now traded between a mother and the daughter she had raised while that record was climbing the charts.
How the album landed
The album came out in Canada on November 13, 2007, and was certified Double Platinum there within about six weeks. One Canadian magazine named two tracks as the album’s highlights: the duet with Dusty Springfield and the duet with Dawn.
In the United States, it was released on January 15, 2008, and debuted at No. 8 on Billboard’s country albums chart and No. 42 on the all-genre Billboard 200. A television special built around the album also featured Anne singing with Dawn.
That same fall, Dawn had just finished recording her first full-length album. It arrived in 2009 under the title Highwire.
What came after
The duets album turned out to be part of a goodbye. Anne Murray announced her final major tour in October 2007 and gave her last public concert in Toronto on May 23, 2008. After a Christmas album later that year, she stepped away from recording and performing.
Dave Loggins died on July 10, 2024, at 76. Anne Murray, now 81, has stayed retired from the stage, though in 2025 she released Here You Are, a collection of songs found in her archives, and received the Juno Awards’ Lifetime Achievement honor.
Between them, the two recordings of “Nobody Loves Me Like You Do” hold most of a lifetime. One captured a country star at the top of the charts with a songwriter who had no label. The other captured the same star, near the end of her career, singing it with the little girl who had been five years old when it was No. 1.
Which version do you remember first: the 1984 radio hit with Dave Loggins, or the mother-daughter recording from 2007?
