Less than two months before Toby Keith died, he stood before thousands of fans in Las Vegas and did what he had spent much of his life doing: singing country music.

Three sold-out concerts in December 2023 marked a remarkable return for a man who had spent nearly two years dealing with stomach cancer.

But what many fans didn’t know was that Toby Keith had already put himself through a demanding test months earlier. Before committing to another major concert run, Toby wanted to find out whether he could still handle the physical demands of performing.

And the way Toby Keith chose to answer that question says a great deal about his determination.

Two Years Away From the Road

Toby Keith was diagnosed with stomach cancer in late 2021. When Toby publicly disclosed the diagnosis in June 2022, he explained that he had been undergoing treatment and needed time to recover.

For an entertainer accustomed to touring, recording, and performing before enormous crowds, life had changed considerably.

Concerts were no longer something Toby Keith could simply schedule without considering his health. He had spent much of the previous two years away from regular touring.

But Toby Keith never lost interest in getting back to work.

By the summer of 2023, he was beginning to test whether a return to live performances was possible.

The Secret Test in Oklahoma

In late June 2023, Toby Keith brought his band to Hollywood Corners, a small music venue in Norman, Oklahoma, associated with the singer.

There was no enormous arena, no major Las Vegas production, and no widely promoted comeback concert.

Instead, Toby Keith made surprise appearances on two consecutive nights, June 30 and July 1.

What began as an opportunity to rehearse became a full-length performance. Toby sang his familiar hits and some of the informal favorites fans knew as his Bus Songs.

Contemporary reports described the first performance as lasting approximately two and a half hours. In a November interview with Taste of Country, Toby Keith recalled performing two three-hour shows.

The important part was not the exact number of minutes.

Toby Keith wanted to know whether he could get through a demanding evening onstage. After completing both performances, he described the experience as being much like riding a bike.

For the first time in a long while, a full-scale return to the road seemed within reach.

Three Sold-Out Nights in Las Vegas

In October 2023, Toby Keith announced two concerts at Dolby Live at Park MGM in Las Vegas, scheduled for December 10 and 11.

Both shows sold out within minutes.

The response was so overwhelming that a third performance was added for December 14.

On December 10, Toby Keith returned to the Las Vegas stage for a concert lasting approximately two hours.

He performed major hits from his long career and included a particularly memorable segment in which he sat on a stool at center stage to sing six songs he believed deserved to have been released as singles.

It was a different kind of moment from the high-energy performances many fans remembered, but the music remained at the center of the evening.

Toby Keith returned for the second show on December 11 and completed the third on December 14.

He Was Already Thinking About 2024

Perhaps the most moving part of Toby Keith’s final concert story is what he had been saying just weeks earlier.

During his November 30 interview with Taste of Country, Toby Keith discussed plans for a possible full-scale tour in 2024.

A new stage set had been prepared. There were discussions about getting the trucks and buses ready. Toby Keith was looking beyond Las Vegas toward more opportunities to perform.

Those three concerts had not been announced as a farewell tour.

They were part of Toby Keith’s effort to return to the work he loved.

But December 14, 2023, became his final public concert.

Toby Keith died on February 5, 2024, at the age of 62.

Looking back, the Oklahoma performances and the Las Vegas concerts reveal something more meaningful than a singer refusing to acknowledge his illness.

Toby Keith understood that returning to the stage would require preparation. He tested his endurance, rehearsed with his band, and performed again when he felt ready.

Even in the final months of his life, Toby Keith was making plans for another year of music.

He wasn’t preparing those Las Vegas shows as a goodbye. He was preparing to get back to work.
